Please confirm Burt's schedule and availability by email to: marfagliders@aol.com YEAR-ROUND SERVICES by Appointment: Glider Rides, Glider Flight Instruction, FAA Private & Commercial Practical Tests ("checkrides"), FAA Flight Instructor Certification & Renewals, Towpilot Endorsements, Flight Reviews & aerotows for private gliders. The Airport RV Park is available for glider pilots. (Hard side campers only, no tents.) Email marfagliders@aol.com to discuss my availability. FINISH your glider rating at Marfa. Want a concentrated course to finish your glider rating? Sorry, no "crash" courses, but I do offer quality training to meet your goals. Come to west Texas and enjoy our excellent weather (not too warm up here at our 5,000' msl airport elevation!) and the wonderful scenery of the Texas Big Bend country. Apply for your personalized instruction course and your FAA Practical Test ("checkride") with Burt Compton. If you qualify, I will help you achieve your goals, and show you a good time! Email for training details, schedules and accommodations: marfagliders@aol.com BRINGING YOUR GLIDER TO MARFA? I can provide aerotows with advance notice, but only when I am in town. Email us for the file of "PRE-MARFA PROJECTS" to prepare your glider, crew, and trailer. This document contains good advice on oxygen, landout kits, radio antennas and more, from the handout of the 1960's created by legendary Marfa Contest Manager Fritz Kahl. Our Marfa Accommodations & Activities guide is also available. Please contact me to discuss the dates you plan to visit, and bring a crew. Bringing your dedicated chase-crew is recommended as I do not offer retrieve services. I do offer crew training / how to back up a trailer and more! Obtain a El Paso aeronautical (sectional) chart to understand our topography and to see the distant airports (most ranch airport runways are too narrow for gliders, and are fenced and locked.) GLIDER FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR (CFIG) "BOOT CAMP". I've been asked to organize a training camp exclusively for renewing, reinstating (expired CFIG's) and generating NEW CFI-Glider Instructors. The "Add-On" glider category to an existing (or expired) Airplane Flight Instructor is relatively simple. An "initial" CFI requires more time, but I would enjoy helping you earn your CFIG, or "add-on", renew or reinstate your CFI-Glider, so let me know if you are interested in a group course at Marfa for groundschool and backseat flying. Fall and Winter would be the preferred season at Marfa. We may enjoy some thermals, but generally smoother conditions and mild temperatures for flight training. Let me know if you are interested and we will discuss some dates. CFIG training and checkrides are also available as a one-on-one basis, but the "CFIG Boot Camp" idea sounds like fun! Email Burt at marfagliders@aol.com Burt's Calendar: * Note: I will participate in out-of-town events marked with a red asterisk, so we will be not be flying at Marfa these dates. 2009 * June 26 - July 5, 2009: Elmira, NY International Vintage Sailplane Meet (IVSM) on historic Harris Hill, site of our newly expanded National Soaring Museum. I will join in this glorious reunion of pilots and vintage / classic sailplanes. More info at www.soaringmuseum.org No flying at Marfa while I'm away, as I plan to trailer my beautiful 1968 Schleicher ASK-13 across the USA to this event. The drive will take me about 5 days to travel each way. Ground crew / copilots needed at Elmira! * September 1 - October 3, 2009: (Exact dates to be determined.) Join me in Germany! Every year I go soaring in Germany, and to visit friends at the historic birthplace of soaring at the Wasserkuppe hill near Fulda, north of Frankfurt. Then we will fly at the Koenigsdorf Soaring Center south of Munich for two weeks. This is a beautiful soaring site just north of the Bavarian Alps and Switzerland. Come join us in Germany for a VIP tour of the Wasserkuppe gliderport, the newly expanded German Soaring Museum, the Old Timers Club (OSC), and more. I can arrange hotel accommodations and glider rides at the Wasserkuppe and at Koenigsdorf. I can also suggest sightseeing tours of Fulda and Munich, and points between. Just let me know by August 20. No flying at Marfa while I'm away. * November 8 - 17, 2009: We will travel to Miami, Florida to visit friends and family, attend the annual "Fernstock Music Festival" (a reunion of Miami musicians on Saturday afternoon NOV 14) and to enjoy "Stone Crab Season".
2010 * January 27 - 31, 2010: Little Rock, Arkansas. The Soaring Society of America Convention. I will attend the SSA Convention, the SSA Directors' and the Soaring Safety Foundation Trustees meetings. * July - August 2010 / 2011: SOARING SAFARI ( Dates to be determined.) I'm considering organizing a "follow the sun" soaring expedition starting in Marfa and flying north or wherever the good weather / Dr. Jack takes us, much like the 1960's "Endless Summer" surfing movie. I will provide my towplane and a towpilot for the group. I'll fly my DG-1000T, and perhaps 10 or so pilots and crews will join us. Not a training camp, nor a competition, just a chance to fly OLC straight outs to nice places north of Marfa - perhaps into the midwest or along the front range of he Rockies. Let me know if you are interested in participating as a pilot (or a crew to drive the trailers, but crew members will rotate into an open seat in a DG-1000 or Duo Discus.) Who knows where we will land -- and who cares? We'll be ambassadors for soaring across the USA! * Note: I will participate in the out-of-town events marked with a red asterisk, so we will be not be flying at Marfa these dates.
